This is a simple rice bowl to make once you get used to the essential ingredients to chinese condiments.
I learnt this recipe from my mother who has taught me that the vegetables in the ingredient list does not strictly have to be bell peppers and carrots. If you're a fan, bittergourd goes well with the meat too.
the beef used can be easily replaced with other types of meat which makes this recipe flexible because, the chinese fermented black beans and the condiments flavour the whole rice bowl themselves.
Sirloin steaks
I sliced 2 sirloin steaks in to thin strips. Slicing in the opposite direction of the lines on the beef can make the beef strips easier to chew.
Chinese fermented black beans
This ingredient is crucial! Chinese fermented black beans bring in incredible flavour and is great when enhanced with minced garlic. this ingredient can be found in a local asian supermarket.
Oyster sauce and soy sauce
These essential Chinese condiments adds more flavour to this recipe. it enhances the umami flavour with the fermented black beans and creates a beautiful dark coloured sauce.
Tips
cornstarch+water solution
this solution is important for a thicker texture in the sauce and not a 'watery' texture.

Total time: 20-30 minutes
Ingredients:
2 Sirloin steaks (400g)
1 red bell pepper
2 carrots
1 small brown onion
2 cloves garlic
2 tbsp Chinese fermented black beans
2 tbsp oyster sauce
2 tbsp soy sauce
2 tsp sesame oil
2 tsp cornstarch
1 tbsp vegetable oil
Method:
Slice and marinate the sirloin steaks with a tablespoon of oyster sauce, a teaspoon of cornstarch and sesame oil.
Boil the rice in a rice cooker under the regular ‘white rice’ setting. . If you do not have access to a rice cooker, boil one part of the rice to two parts of water in a pot for 20 minutes with the lid on.
Wash and rinse the Chinese fermented black beans thoroughly with water. Mash the beans until a paste forms. The paste does not have to be very smooth and lumps of beans in the paste will do fine.
Slice an onion, bell peppers, carrots and mince the garlic. Mix the minced garlic with the mashed black beans.
In a pan under high heat, heat a tablespoon of oil. Fry the marinated sirloin steak slices until browned.
Add in the minced garlic and black beans paste mixture and fry for a minute. Add in sliced onions into the pan and continue to stir fry until the onion become translucent.
Add in the sliced bell peppers and carrots. Continue to stir fry for a minute.
Mix a teaspoon of cornstarch with 1/4 cup of water into a solution and pour into the pan. Stir and cover the pan with a lid then let it simmer for a few minutes.
Serve with rice.
