Baked instead of deep fried! Try a different way of cooking money bag dumplings. This time with filo pastry.
Not traditional but in case you don't have access to vegan dumpling wrappers or when you cant be asked to make dumpling dough!
Chinese dried mushrooms
These really added an extra umami flavour to the money bags. Be sure to soak them in warm water for at least an hour.
Firm tofu
I broke up the firm tofu to imitate minced pork in dumplings. Which helped! This gave a chewy texture to the filling
Filo pastry
Filo pastry can get dried out very quickly and they can crack themselves. Make sure to put a damp cloth over the sheets that you will not be using straight away. Also take note on the packaging for when to take the filo pastry out of the fridge so that it can unfold easily when you are about to put them in use!
Oil the filo sheets on both sides. This can make the folding of the dumplings process easier.
Makes 18 dumplings
Total time: 1 hour
Ingredients:
123g tofu
20g carrot (chopped into small pieces)
1 spring onion (chopped)
2 dried Chinese Mushroom
1 tsp tamari
43g vermicelli noodles (optional)
3 filo pastry sheets
A bunch of chives
Olive oil
Method:
Soak the Chinese dried mushrooms in warm water for an hour. Chop into small pieces.
Soak vermicelli noodles in hot water until soft and cooked. Divide into smaller pieces instead of long noodles.
Break the firm tofu into pieces and mash. Mix in the chopped Chinese mushrooms, carrots, spring onion, vermicelli and tamari sauce.
Place the chives in hot water for about 10-15 minutes.
Spread oil evenly on both sides of a filo pastry sheet. Divide into 6 parts. Place about 1-2 teaspoon of filling in the centre of each filo section. Combine the ends into the shape of a dumpling. (Watch instagram video for reference). Repeat for the rest of the filo sheets.
Take a blanched chive then take the ends and tie a knot around each dumpling.
Bake in a preheated grill for 30 minutes on medium heat/preheated oven for 30 minutes at 160C for 30 minutes. If wanting a more golden brown colour, bake at 190C for an additional 5 minutes.
