Coraline's waffle breakfast

Updated: Mar 30, 2022

One of the underrated breakfast in Coraline! We almost forget about this scene as it is a short scene of waffle eating before Coraline watches Mr. Bobinsky's jumping mice performance. If you haven't noticed the other mother doesn't eat anything because *spoiler alert* she's not human and eats children! Only the made up father and Coraline eats waffles.

'I love dinner breakfast food'

- Other father

From what I've observed, I guessing there is a strawberry compote action going on and some cream in the other's father's waffles. Beside Coraline, I see a muffin and some scrambled eggs in front of her. For the muffin, I got a store-bought blueberry muffin.

I had some tulips that reminded me of the dragon snappers in this scene!

Waffle maker

I used Giles & Posner's mini waffle maker 15 (l) x 10.5 (w) x 22.4 (h) cm.

Once the batter was in and the lid closed, the red light will turn on. After the red light turns off, it signals that the waffles are done cooking.

The waffle batter is similar to my past waffle recipes. As I am using a mini waffle maker, 2 tbsp of batter makes one waffle.

Strawberry compote

This compote is simple and only involves 3 ingredients: strawberries, water and sugar!

I used dark brown sugar to achieve a more caramel look for white sugar will work fine too.

Substitute for dark brown sugar

White sugar

Double cream

You'll need double cream to be able to whip them into a thick and creamy texture. Be sure to whip it for 2 minutes and not more as over-whipping will make it turn into butter!

Substitute:

Store bought ready whipped cream

This makes 2-3 servings

Total time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

strawberry compote

225g strawberries

1 tbsp sugar

1 1/2 tbsp water

waffles

150g self-raising flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp salt

1 egg

1 cup milk

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

1 tbsp butter/oil (for greasing)

2 tbsp per waffle

whipped cream

1 1/4 cup double cream

scrambled eggs

3 eggs

pinch of salt

store bought blueberry muffin

Method:

  1. Quarter the strawberries. Set 1/4 of the strawberries aside and put the rest in a pot. On medium heat, simmer the strawberries in water for 5 minutes. Mix in dark brown sugar and mush the strawberries to break them intro smaller pieces. Put the reserved strawberries in and simmer for 2 minutes.Set aside and leave it to cool.

  2. Mix the dry ingredients (self-raising flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt) and wet ingredients (egg, milk, vanilla extract) together to make the waffle batter. Grease a waffle maker with butter/oil and pour 2 tablespoons of batter in. Cover and let it cook for about 5 minutes.

  3. Whip the double cream for 2 minutes with an electric whisk.

  4. Beat eggs and mix in some salt. Heat a pan under medium heat with a tablespoon of olive oil. Pour in beaten eggs and scramble.

  5. Layer the waffles with the whipped cream and strawberry compote in the order you desire! Assemble all the dishes together and enjoy.
